Snow is the subject of the latest Pastel Journal magazine. I got inspired by that, and decided to curate my own collection of artworks that feature snow.
Plus, finally having some snow on the ground helped me get in the mood.
Your inspiration led to some beautiful creations. The thematic presentation of your work is effective, and "hangs" together very nicely. I've been meaning to ask you about how you deal with the toxicity of pastels. Do you wear a mask and gloves? It's been decades since I've used this medium and I'm wondering if changes in the product have occurred.
Hi, Kathy. I did manage to get some iron deficiency, or borderline anemia, a few years back. I took iron for that. Possibly from toxicity.
I make sure to catch my dust in a tray and dispose of it with a mask and gloves on. I don't rub the pastels as much as I used to, but I still demand a bare finger for that when I do. I don't wear gloves at the easel, but will don the mask occasionally, whenever there might be airborne particles, or when I use fixative indoors.
When I make pastel sticks, I do so in the basement in a dedicated area. with mask and gloves on.
Casey, I've been very interested in your comments on Kathy's blog, so I came to check out your art. Beautifully done! When I first looked the the "towpath" picture, I immediately thought of Wolf Kahn's work. Then I saw your caption. I love his use of suggestion and his color choices. Lovely work!
Yeah, I am WK's number 1 fan. I have executed a few copies of his work, but this one is the most finished. His is in oil, and mine is pastel - but the composition is all WK. The colors, though, developed differently in mine.

ReplyDeleteit's magical to see what a colorist does with a pile of rocks. i also love to see what's behind the garage. masterful as always!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'll go put my jacket on now.
ReplyDeleteI especially like "Hut on the Heath." It looks cold and windy and has a lot of energy and life.
Thank you, Irina!

SamArtDog and Katherine - thank you.
ReplyDeleteNeed to get into the snow mood? come on over, we've had more than enough so far this winter.
ReplyDeleteLove the lavender colors...
Maybe I should, Jala. I've surely lost the mood, now. Had to go meet the school bus today because of thaw melt blocking our road. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, I finally got something happening in the stdio - a struggle but I am trying to be tenacious.

I get to keep this one, too!
