Here is a documentary by the Beeb that takes you to many of Matisse's historical places. I enjoyed it, and I took some Matisse lessons into the studio with me yesterday.
I have always been a huge Matisse fan. The BMA has quite a collection of his work. Ever try drawing with a six foot long stick with a carpenters pencil tied to it? Man is that fun. Really enjoying your work! Wm
You always find the best videos, Casey! Thanks for this one, too. I've gotta spend more time searching the youtube library. I keep forgetting it exists!
I watched the first video and I will finish watching them all...because it is good! I loved when Matisse's Mother gave him a paint-box! thanks for the link!
Then she lived to regret it, Celeste. Her son became an artist. A large part of his story is the "man of the north" theme. Industry, stoicism and hard labor. Pale colors and gray skies.
It took a long time for his star to rise to the absolute top of the French art ladder. Even then, his parents were mystified.

ReplyDeleteI was critical of this vid series at first, but it turned out pretty good, Kathy.
ReplyDeleteHi, William! I enjoyed looking at your blog for the first time. Glad you looked here.
Wonderful video. The chapel is incredible.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Linda, I read about the chapel in Vence, but this video tour is outstanding. I kept wishing the BBC guy would shut up, though.

Vincent van Gogh was also a man of the north.
