"Painting is easy, till you know how."
Edgar Degas. h/t Wolf Kahn.
Speaking of Kahn, I found an interesting lesson plan at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts: Wolf Kahn, A Curriculum of his Life, Work and Influences. I didn't like the section where a teacher assigns common meanings to colors, but if you stand back from the whole lesson plan, you see a nice hodge-podge of data on contemporary beliefs about color. Actually, it is a collection of various lesson plans on color, with an emphasis on Modern art and current artists. There are also a lot of art and education links embedded in this plan.
The Wolf Kahn images are enough to recommend this pdf. file to you.
Quote, Hoyt Center curriculum,
These lesson plans are the result of the work of the teachers who have attended the Columbia Education Center’s Summer Workshop. CEC is a consortium of teacher from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops.
Wow Casey, what an excellent resource you have shared with us. I can't wait to sit down and savor the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteLove the quote, "to be creative, ... may mean nothing more than the refusal to be habit ridden." Also loved knowing that he likes "to go to the danger paint with color... almost too sweet. too harsh, too noisy or too quiet." Great way to look at exploring.
Thanks again.
PS Have you every studied with or met Wolf Kahn?
No, I haven't, Loriann. I did see his pastels in NYC.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Casey. Again. The Colorist continues to be not only a treasure trove of links but a wonderful journey towards the heart of color.
ReplyDeleteThanks Casey, have you seen this?

Hey, SamArtDog. Appreciate your reading. Yes, I did see it, Lou. Very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteMr. Prujdak. Great to see your website, and I'm glad you are painting what you love, esp. surfing and so. Cal.
If I were starting out today, I'd probably get an education at an atelier in classical realism. Then, I'd promptly forget all of that, and paint from the heart.
Only you know yourself if you could get through a course at an atelier, and yet not drink the kool-aid.
Thanks, Casey, for the naming this resource. I'll look into it.
ReplyDeletethanks for the feed back I appreciate it...all the best
ReplyDeleteAs always, Kathy, thanks for looking in.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Pujdak.
I have always loved Wolf Kahn! Thanks for sharing the lesson plan from the Hoyt about him. I saw a nice show of his work in Reno at the Stremmel Gallery last year. A thrill to see his work in person.
ReplyDeleteI was the model for a workshop taught by Wolf Kahn at the National Academy of Design. It was about two years ago, I think. Nice guy! He said I had a beautiful flesh tone. And I responded, "Why thanks, Wolfy baby!" (No I didn't say that. Just kidding )
ReplyDeleteClaudia
Hey, Claudia and Katherine. Everything's different in person. Claudia, that must have been an education. I find Wolf Kahn's videos where he speaks, and his longer interviews, very enlightening because he can speaks in-depth.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the link to a wonderful reference on WK.
ReplyDeletePleased to meet you, Bruce.
ReplyDeleteI just tried to find this lesson plan and hit a brick wall. Perhaps they've taken it down.
ReplyDeleteHi Casey,
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon your posting and was very interested in seeing Kahn's curriculum but it appears the Hoyt has taken it down. You don't still have a copy of the PDF that you could share by any chance?
I actually think I do...let me search.
