Artist's Quotes
"An artist is not paid for his labor, but for his vision," James McNeill Whistler.
"There are more valid facts and details in works of art than there are in history books," Charlie Chaplin.
"My theory is that all of Scottish cuisine is based on a dare, " Mike Myers.
"There is no must in art because art is free," Wassily Kandinsky.
"The creative artist seems to be almost the only kind of man that you could never meet on neutral ground. You can only meet him as an artist. He sees nothing objectively because his own ego is always in the foreground of every picture," Raymond Chandler.
"Art is either plagiarism or revolution," Paul Gauguin.
"Any artist should be grateful for a naive grace which puts him beyond the need to reason elaborately," Saul Bellow.
"Art is the proper task of life," Friedrich Nietzsche.
"What good are computers? They can only give you answers," Pablo Picasso.
All great quotes, Casey! I like Gaugin's best. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is the most declarative - he is all or nothing. I have a set of quotes to contradict that one, too.
ReplyDeleteAmbiguity? You bet!
In quotes, as in art, there is no neutral ground...
ReplyDeleteAmbiguity rocks!
-Don
I love quotes!
ReplyDeleteThiebaud--! He said a batch of good things too.
When you think of painting as painting it is rather absurd. The real world is before us – glorious sunlight and activity and fresh air, and high speed motor cars and television, all the animation – a world apart from a little square of canvas that you smear paint on. (Wayne Thiebaud)
I found myself nodding in part and arguing in my head in part about all of them. A grain of truth, if not absolute truths, I think.
ReplyDeleteThiebaud has so many quotes because he's a long standing teacher. I really eat up his video interviews.
ReplyDeleteRight on, Don. I will try to post some quotes next that contradict these. I have some ideas, anyway.
Good on you for interacting with these, Steph. I argue with everything I read.
These are wonderful - so many of them made me laugh - especially the ones that are true.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you read them, Katherine. I enjoy your blog very much, too, BTW.
ReplyDeleteRight on! Truth from the ages is true today.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting, Ed. These are rather high minded quotes (except for Mike Myers') and I hope you'll stay tuned for my next round which will mix it up.
ReplyDelete"Paint for his/her vision."Whistler says it best (to me.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the quotes..it's always good to read new ones.
I did just read some history on Whistler, and am eager to know more.
ReplyDeletePaint on, Loriann.
Plenty to think about here. I think I like the Whistler quote best.
ReplyDeleteI am favoring two - but I won't give them away.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kvan.
