Remember when artist and blogger Loriann Signori introduced me to her favored slough in La Conner, WA? My impression was different from hers, and somewhat driven by my choice of rough-tooth Richeson board. Sometimes I think I want to bring my outdoor works to a finish, and other times I want something to take to the studio. Other times, I have no idea what to do at all!
Let's see, how would I put it?... This one of the slough, "In The Draw" and "The Folded Tree" all have a spare extravagance of color. It's what sets your work apart. You can quote me.
I love the loose quality of your strokes here, Casey - that plus the subtle color arrangement make for a drawing rich in suggestion and feeling. Kyoko and I are in Europe for 2-1/2 weeks on vacation, first in Germany and then in Provence. I'm planning for lots of time spent drawing en plein air and hope my efforts might approach the immediacy and beauty of your work at the slough. I enjoyed the WK video, BTW.
Hi Casey! Your version of the slough is BEAUTIFUL! And it was fun to share my painting spot with you. Your use of neutrals shows off your pure color, plus they bring a kind of harmony that would not be present without them. Nice! PS Thanks for taking the time to visit me in La Conner!

ReplyDelete"a spare extravagance of color"
ReplyDeleteI will use it. After I figure it out.
Ha ha. Sometimes its hard to verbalize these things, Sam. I sure love that you read and look at my humble paintings.
It is interesting to explore color. For a number of years I used no neutrals whatsoever - primary & secondary only. Pure tones.
Now, I am using the neutrals because I noticed they can express full intensities, too. Does anyone know why?
Anyway, the thing with colorism is intensities. Often, intensities before temperatures.
It looks mystical!
ReplyDeleteReally gorgeous Casey! And I like that you have a bear in that shadow...:)
ReplyDeleteI think I meant, a judicious amount of intense color. Or something.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Lisa's right... thar's a bar in thar.
Ooooo, I love this. Mysterious, cool, lovely.
ReplyDeleteI am glad it goes over well. I did begin exploring it some more in a small work, today.
ReplyDeleteThanx, Kvan (from Alaska), Lisa(during workshop), and the Boulderites!

ReplyDeleteThat's a high compliment, Brian. Glad you got to see this WK vid- it is hopefully a subtle addition to the blog.
ReplyDeleteI am soon to change the vid.
You and Kyoko have fun in Europe.
