The Cremation of Sam McGee
Let Zane regale you again, this time with a frightening pyre. He is my school chum from long ago.

I was going to suggest you change your 'Americana' label on this post to 'Canadiana' but then Zane reminded me Sam was in fact from Tennessee.
Actually, Charlene, I had no idea Service was a Canadian, and I think you were right in the first place.
I was given to my misconception by the American part of the Klondike Gold Rush, especially with our local Seattle connections.
The last guy I heard recite this poem, BTW, was Big Jim Whittaker. That was cool.
Thanks for filling me in!!
Casey,
Thanks for the treat. My dad used to recite this poem to us each Halloween night... scared the dickens out of my sisters & I. His voice was a bit more gruff & gravelly, but the delivery was similar. Fond memories!
I really want to memorize it, now. Thanks, Ruth.`
Books of Robert Service's poems were in every bookstore I went in from Juneau south! Thanks for sharing!
A guy walks into a bar in Whitehorse. The local says to him, "you look like Robert Service."
Then, the trouble begins...
