Hottest Blogs for 2011 - Sonya Johnson

When you see the big molten-lava orb, then you know it's time for a Hottest Blog entry.  This is where The Colorist points out the hottest artist's blog that you may not be reading yet.  But should.

The Hottest Blogs for 2011 will also be noted one at a time, or maybe sometimes two at a time.  Look for the molten orb periodically throughout the year.

Have you seen Sonya Johnson's blog, Sonya's Daily Art Journal?  Her oils and pastels of the Durango, Colorado region are an instinctive and accurate fit for the four corners area, a high and arid region of the American Southwest.  She observes this area effortlessly, and also has no problem with the estimable bigness of the desert and the mountains of her home.  Sonya's blog is one to watch for 2011.

Oh...my! Casey, when this showed up on my dashboard feed, I almost fell out of my chair. Seriously - I am speechless.

Thank you. You know how much I appreciate your thoughtful comments and support, but this is just...wow. I'm humbled and honored, Casey.

As a big fan of your work, this really means a lot to me.

Thanks again, Casey!

I wish I could demonstrate the same easy representation that you do with your paintings, Sonya. You are a very talented artist.

I don't know, Casey - your paintings always seem to me to have the look of being created without struggle - a quality I find consistent in the best art I see.

I suppose that's one of the things we aim for as artists, isn't it, to make it appear as though the resultant piece was effortless, even when we know it was anything but...

One must have absolute passion for their subject for it to appear effortless as well, I believe.

Oh, I know you struggle!! Otherwise the result wouldn't be fine. It's the end product that has veracity and evidences artistic truth that looks easy.

Looks easy. We know different.

Good words about passion.

As far as my work, I am inventorying for studio visits and sales. As I evaluate what I've got, I am reminded about how there is a guy who comes in here, who looks a lot like Jack Nicholson, and he's wielding an ax. He destroys a number of my works, but then only the best ones make it to exhibit.

Of course, that guy is me, being critical of my own work, and wanting to find out what is truly fine.

Good to see you, Sheila!

The new tool for image sizing at blogger allows me to easily super-size my favorite gifs.

Thanks for alerting us to Sonya's blog. I yearn for the high desert and big skies of her terrain, so I'm really loving falling into her art. And thanks, Casey, for the daily dose of color on your blog.

thanks for the link, Casey---I really like your whirling globe!

You're welcome, Celeste. The globe belongs to an open source, so I can't take the credit for it.

Usually, when I have an open source image, I try to credit the creator. Unless they use a computer pseudonym that makes no sense. My main source is Photobucket.
